What to check before you open an account in Australia

  • Search the company name on the ASIC register (moneysmart.gov.au).
  • Check which company your contract is with. IG, for example, onboards residents of Australia through IG Australia Pty Ltd (ASIC licence 515106), and the name on the account-opening documents should match the list.

What is the best CFD broker in Australia?

By Coinish Score, IG (78/100, Editor Rating 4.2/5), through IG Australia Pty Ltd (ASIC licence 515106). eToro (73) and OANDA (71) follow. The score rates the company that would serve you in Australia, so the same brand can rank differently in another country.

How are CFD gains taxed in Australia?

In most cases the ATO taxes CFD gains as ordinary income. Its ruling TR 2005/15 says a gain is assessable, and a loss deductible, when the trade is part of running a business or a profit-making venture. CFDs taken out as recreational gambling are treated differently. The gain isn't assessable, the loss isn't deductible, and any capital gain or loss is ignored.

ASIC also parted ways with the EU and UK on risk warnings. It decided not to make each provider publish its own figures, such as the share of accounts that lose money. It did ban inducements for retail clients, including trading credits, rebates and free gifts.
