What to check before you open an account in Austria
- Search the company name on the FMA (Austria) register (fma.gv.at); for a firm licensed elsewhere, on its home regulator's register too (MFSA, CSSF and CySEC for most of this list).
- Check which company your contract is with. Coinbase, for example, onboards residents of Austria through Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. (CSSF, MiCA CASP · LEI 984500F14CA4571AAC11), and the name on the account-opening documents should match the list.
- Confirm the exchange is an authorised CASP on ESMA's interim MiCA register, and that Austria is among the member states it has notified.
Is crypto trading legal in Austria?

What is the best crypto exchange in Austria?
By Coinish Score, Coinbase (80/100, Editor Rating 4.1/5), through Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. (CSSF, MiCA CASP · LEI 984500F14CA4571AAC11). Revolut (77) and Crypto.com (77) follow. The score rates the company that would serve you in Austria, so the same brand can rank differently in another country.
Does an Austrian crypto exchange deduct tax for you?
Bybit, KuCoin, Bitpanda, WhiteBIT, Coinfinity, DADAT and 21bitcoin are licensed in Austria. Since 2024, Austrian providers have had to deduct the 27.5% KESt on crypto gains and pass it to the tax office. That settles the tax, so those gains stay out of your return. The other 14 exchanges are licensed in other member states, and with them you declare the gains yourself.

Can a crypto exchange licensed in another EU country serve you in Austria?
Yes. A crypto-asset service provider authorised under MiCA in one member state can serve residents of the others once its home regulator has notified them. 14 of the 21 on this list reach Austria that way, most from Malta (4), Luxembourg (2) and Cyprus (2).
The home regulator supervises the exchange, and ESMA keeps the central register of authorised CASPs, so you can check any of them there.

Is crypto held on an exchange protected in Austria?
Crypto held with an exchange is not covered by investor compensation schemes, so the exchange's own safeguards (segregated client assets, cold storage, proof of reserves) matter more than for a broker account.

Do you pay tax on crypto profits in Austria?
Income from crypto, including gains on sale, is taxed at a special rate of 27.5%. In Austria, swapping one cryptocurrency for another doesn't count as a disposal, so it isn't taxed. Tax is due only when you sell for money or other goods.
