What is the best stock broker in Australia?

By Coinish Score, moomoo (77/100, Editor Rating 3.8/5), through Moomoo Securities Australia Ltd (ASIC licence 224663). IG (77) and Webull (73) follow. The score rates the company that would serve you in Australia, so the same brand can rank differently in another country.

Do you legally own the shares you buy through an Australian app?

That depends on how the broker holds them. With a CHESS-sponsored account, your shares are recorded on the CHESS subregister under your own Holder Identification Number (HIN). It works much like an account number, and one HIN can cover everything you own. Many apps use a custodian instead. Your shares are then pooled with other investors' under a single HIN belonging to the custodian, usually the broker or its nominee, and it's the custodian's name on the share register. You keep beneficial ownership, but not legal ownership.

Every broker here is ASIC-licensed, but a licence doesn't tell you which of the two models it uses. Look for CHESS sponsorship or a custodian in the account terms before you buy.
