21 licensed crypto exchanges, ranked on the company that would actually open your account. How we rate
Cryptoassets are highly volatile and largely unregulated in some countries. You could lose all the money you invest, and you may not be protected by a compensation scheme.

What to check before you open an account in Germany
- Search the company name on the BaFin register (portal.mvp.bafin.de); for a firm licensed elsewhere, on its home regulator's register too (FMA (Austria), MFSA and CSSF for most of this list).
- Check which company your contract is with. Coinbase, for example, onboards residents of Germany through Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. (CSSF, MiCA CASP · LEI 984500F14CA4571AAC11), and the name on the account-opening documents should match the list.
- Confirm the exchange is an authorised CASP on ESMA's interim MiCA register, and that Germany is among the member states it has notified.

What is the best crypto exchange in Germany?
By Coinish Score, Coinbase (80/100, Editor Rating 4.1/5), through Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. (CSSF, MiCA CASP · LEI 984500F14CA4571AAC11). Revolut (77) and Crypto.com (77) follow. The score rates the company that would serve you in Germany, so the same brand can rank differently in another country.
Does a German broker deduct tax on crypto?
Trade Republic, one of the German-licensed providers here, says it doesn't take tax off crypto gains. You report them yourself in your tax return as private sales, and you can't set them against your saver's allowance (Freistellungsauftrag) or existing loss pots.

Can a crypto exchange licensed in another EU country serve you in Germany?
Yes. A crypto-asset service provider authorised under MiCA in one member state can serve residents of the others once its home regulator has notified them. 19 of the 21 on this list reach Germany that way, most from Austria (6), Malta (4) and Luxembourg (2).
The home regulator supervises the exchange, and ESMA keeps the central register of authorised CASPs, so you can check any of them there.

Is crypto held on an exchange protected in Germany?
Crypto held with an exchange is not covered by investor compensation schemes, so the exchange's own safeguards (segregated client assets, cold storage, proof of reserves) matter more than for a broker account.

Do you pay tax on crypto profits in Germany?
Under current law, a sale of crypto held for more than one year is not a taxable private sale (§ 23 EStG covers disposals within a year). A Finance Ministry draft would abolish that one-year holding period and tax crypto gains at 25%; it was not law when we checked in October 2026.
