Best stock brokers & investing apps in the Netherlands

The value of investments can go down as well as up, and you may get back less than you invest. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

Stocks in the Netherlands: what to know
Of the 10 stock brokers & investing apps on this list, 5 serve the Netherlands from a CySEC licence in Cyprus (eToro, Trading 212, NAGA and 2 more), 2 serve the Netherlands from a BaFin licence in Germany (Trade Republic and DEGIRO), 1 serves the Netherlands from a Danish FSA licence in Denmark (Saxo) and 1 serves the Netherlands from a CBI licence in Ireland (Interactive Brokers); 1 more is licensed by Finantsinspektsioon.
Currency conversion, which you pay on every US share bought from a non-dollar account, costs from 0.25% (Saxo) to 0.35% (Lightyear). Trade Republic charges €1 per order for stocks and ETFs and DEGIRO charges €2 per order for US stocks.
What to check before you open an account in Netherlands
- Search the company name on the AFM register (afm.nl); for a firm licensed elsewhere, on its home regulator's register too (CySEC, BaFin and Danish FSA for most of this list).
- Check which company your contract is with. Saxo, for example, onboards residents of the Netherlands through Saxo Bank A/S (Danish FSA), and the name on the account-opening documents should match the list.
Is share trading legal in the Netherlands?
Yes, with a licensed provider. Brokers need MiFID II authorisation from an EEA regulator; firms authorised elsewhere in the EEA may serve residents under the European passport.

What is the best stock broker in the Netherlands?
By Coinish Score, Saxo (77/100, Editor Rating 4.3/5), through Saxo Bank A/S (Danish FSA). Interactive Brokers (71) and eToro (71) follow. The score rates the company that would serve you in the Netherlands, so the same brand can rank differently in another country.
How do Dutch dividend tax and complaints work with these brokers?
Dutch companies withhold 15% dividend tax before paying you. As a Dutch resident you can offset it against your income tax in your return, so it works as a prepayment, not an extra cost.
Every broker on this list is licensed in another EU country, so you can only take a complaint to Kifid, the Dutch complaints institute, if the firm is affiliated with it. Kifid handles complaints only against affiliated providers, which it lists in its register, and you have to give the firm at least 8 weeks to respond first.

Can a stock broker licensed in another EU country serve you in the Netherlands?
Yes. A firm authorised under MiFID II in one EEA country can serve residents of the others once its home regulator has notified them. All 10 on this list reach the Netherlands that way, most from Cyprus (5), Germany (2) and Denmark (1).
The home regulator supervises the firm and its compensation scheme applies, while AFM can still set conduct rules for clients in the Netherlands.

Is your money protected if a stock broker fails?
If a broker fails, the compensation scheme of the regulator that licenses it applies, not one chosen by where you live. For this list: Investor Compensation Fund (Cyprus): 90% of covered claims, up to €20,000 for clients of CySEC-licensed investment firms (5 on this list); Entschädigungseinrichtung der Wertpapierhandelsunternehmen (EdW): 90% of the claim, up to €20,000 per investor for clients of BaFin-licensed investment firms (2 on this list); Garantiformuen (Finansiel Stabilitet): up to €20,000 per investor for securities for clients of Danish FSA-licensed investment firms (1 on this list); Investor Compensation Company (ICCL): 90% of the loss, up to €20,000 per investor for clients of CBI-licensed investment firms (1 on this list). Compensation covers missing client money and assets after a firm's failure, never trading losses.

Do you pay tax on share profits in the Netherlands?
For 2026 the first €59,357 of your net assets is tax-free (€118,714 for fiscal partners together). Above that, the Belastingdienst assumes your investments returned 6.00% and your bank savings 1.28%, and taxes that assumed return at 36%. Following Supreme Court rulings, it must tax your actual return instead when that is lower; the actual return counts all income from your assets and every change in their value over the calendar year. Box 3 taxes savings and investments on a notional return worked out with fixed percentages, not on actual trading gains, though you can report your actual return instead.
